An App Store For India: Can PhonePe’s Indus Loosen Google’s Grip?

Tech giant Google recently delisted over 10 popular Indian apps from its app store due to billing compliance issues. This sparked anger among homegrown internet companies and led to government intervention. The Indus Appstore and PhonePe spokesperson reported a significant increase in user base, particularly in Tier II cities, with popular app categories including finance, games, social media, entertainment, and shopping. PhonePe aims to partner with smartphone makers like Nokia and Lava to pre-install Indus Appstore on up to 300 million devices by 2024. Indian developers are now actively looking for a robust alternative to Google's app store.
