Silicon Valley’s Secondary Markets Are Bigger Than Ever

Secondary transactions in venture-backed startups are set to reach record levels this year as companies organise tender offers to provide liquidity for employees and investors seek alternative ways to offload stakes. Tender offers allow staff, former employees and specific investors to sell their shares directly to other investors. In 2024, NewView Capital expects startup transactions on secondary markets to exceed $21bn, more than double the previous high in 2023. This surge in secondary deals comes at a time when initial public offerings are scarce.
